How AI search works, and why your business might be missing from it
Getting found used to mean ranking on Google. Now your buyers are asking AI directly, and the rules changed. Here's what's happening, in plain language.
People ask AI for recommendations now.
Instead of scrolling links, buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI "who should I use for this?" and get one answer or a short list. If you're not on it, you're invisible.
Why traditional SEO doesn't cover it.
SEO gets you into a list of links. AI search is different: the engine reads, decides, and names a few businesses. Being on page one of Google doesn't mean AI will mention you.
How AI decides who to name.
AI pulls from sources it can reach, read, and trust. If your information is thin, out of date, or hard to read, you get skipped, and a competitor gets named instead.
What's at stake.
This is happening quietly, right now. The businesses that show up early become the default answer. The ones that wait spend later trying to catch up.
To own the big search, you first have to show up in the small ones.
Head queries are the big, obvious searches - the few questions that define your category. Every business wants to be the answer there. Almost none are, because AI doesn't pick names from nowhere. It builds the answer from the long tail first.
Secondary queries
The specific, narrower questions buyers ask along the way: "how does it compare", "is it worth it for my situation", "what's the alternative". These are where AI learns who's worth naming. Your content should already be answering them.
Head queries
The broad, high-intent searches buyers start with. AI only names you here once you've shown up across the secondary queries around it. This is where the visibility you want actually lives.
Most businesses chase the head query directly and lose, because they're absent from the ground that feeds it. Win the secondary queries with content that genuinely answers them, and the head query follows. It's slower, and it's the only way that holds.
